The bamboo swords are called “shinai”; traditionally styled clothing, “gi”; the protective armor, “bogu”; the exercises, “kata”; and the sport, “kendo”, or way of the sword, the Japanese martial art of fencing. Did you know that it evolved from the centuries old tradition of swordsmanship called “kenjutsu.”

The athletes are “kendoka” or “kendoists”, and these kendoka are members of Penn State Kendo Club whose “doja”, or meeting place, is University Fitness Center on Hershey’s Penn State Milton S. Hershey Medical Center campus.
