This video is the commencement speech of a writer set to video footage that is so pertinent to our young physicians coming up in the world that I was just mesmerized. It was done a few years ago but matches closely with the message that we should relate to the students and housestaff-everyone has a story. In the craziness that is medicine we frequently forget it (or choose to ignore it) but it is there and we should learn to ask that question of our patients and quite frankly of each other, “How’s the water?”

Taste of Diversity – Albóndigas de Camarón (Shrimp Meatballs)

Albóndigas de Camarón (Shrimp Meatballs)
Total Time: 40 minutes
Yield: serves 4-6
Ingredients
• 1 lb fresh Shrimp
• 1 lb Tomatoes (I used half tomatoes half tomatillos)
• 2 tsp oregano
• 1-2 tbs. Maseca or flour
• 1 egg
• Olive oil
• ½ onion, diced
• 2 garlic cloves, minced
• 2 medium carrots, diced
• 2 celery stocks, diced
• 2 tsp Cumin
• 4-5 cups Stock – seafood, shrimp or fish
• Salt
• Pepper
• Cilantro, rinsed and chopped
•
Instructions
1. Roast tomatoes- On a dry comal over medium heat add tomatoes and tomatillos.
2. Turn the tomatoes and tomatillos occasionally. When skin is blackened and blistered remove tomatoes. Allow to cool and dice. Set aside.
3. Peel and devein shrimp. Place shrimp in food processor and pulse until finely ground.
4. Transfer ground shrimp to bowl and add egg, oregano and Maseca or flour.
5. With hands mix until well combined. Wash hands. Lightly oil hands and form small (3/4inch) meatballs.
6. Place on baking sheet and place in fridge until ready to use.
7. In a large soup pot or Dutch oven add 1 tbs olive oil over medium high heat.
8. Add onion, celery, carrots and sauté until tender, about 4 minutes. Add garlic, stir to combine and cook another 30 seconds. Add roasted tomatoes, stir to combine and continue to cook another 2 minutes.
9. Add stock and allow soup to come to a boil. Reduce heat to low and season with salt and pepper.
10. Add shrimp meatballs and cook until firm without stirring for about 5-8 minutes. Add cilantro and taste for seasoning.
11. Ladle into bowl over steamed rice or serve alone as a soup.
12. Garnish with sliced radishes, salsa and warm corn tortillas.

Brunstrom-Hernandez, who founded the Cerebral Palsy Center at St. Louis Children’s Hospital 15 years ago, has cerebral palsy, giving her a special empathy for the people she treats.

Cerebral palsy (CP) is a group of disorders that affect a person’s ability to move and maintain balance and posture. CP is the most common motor disability in childhood. Cerebral means having to do with the brain. Palsy means weakness or problems with using the muscles. CP is caused by abnormal brain development or damage to the developing brain that affects a person’s ability to control his or her muscles.

July’s 150th Anniversary Gettysburg Battle Re-enactment will be global affair

Re-enactors and visitors are coming from all over the world to participate and attend this landmark re-enactment, which unfolds at the Redding Farm on 1085 Table Rock Road, Gettysburg, according to the Gettysburg Convention & Visitors Bureau.

Fallon Fox had gender reassignment surgery in 2006. She fights against women Inside the cage, Fox was free.

Outside, she was caged.

“I want the public to know how it feels, the fear of being scrutinized, of being outed,” Fox said. “The fear of what happens when you come out and the media puts you under a microscope. It’s crippling. You get lost.”

The Supreme Court is expected to rule soon in a case involving the University of Texas on the use of race and ethnicity in college and university admissions nationwide. California, Florida, Michigan and Washington have already outlawed affirmative action in admissions decisions.

A new Yale study has revealed that there is a pervasive and unconscious bias on university campuses that favors male science students over their female counterparts. The result is fewer women in scientific professions. And as a recent Sunday Review article pointed out, it’s not just in science where women are underrepresented, electrical engineering, a huge growth industry, is dominated by men.
